After a long gray winter in Budapest, I felt a month long holiday on the southern coast of Spain was just the ticket to putting a spring back in my step. Several friends, that I meet up with each winter in Chiang Mai, Thailand, have repeatedly invited me to visit them in Torre del Mar which is about a half hour away from Malaga on the coast of Spain. Tangier, Morocco
While In Marrakesh and before traveling down to Tangier I watched Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown first season episode on Morocco. He produced a wonderful cast of characters to interview – almost all of whom have lived in Tangier during what many, including Anthony Bourdain, think of as the golden age of Tangier – the 60’s and 70’s. The expats were eccentric and charming, the interviews peppered with anecdotes of life in Tangier in a bygone era…it was a great introduction to my next stop. I felt a bit of alliteration was called for when I started thinking of Marrakesh. The adjectives I used are all correct…perhaps not all the time or in every corner of the city but overall it is a special place and they apply. My friend Moira Stewart and I headed down to Marrakesh on the train from Fes and it was an excellent day to be traveling across the country into the foothills of the Atlas mountains. Continue Reading…
